Chapter Eight
Alex walked into the kitchen and was surprised to see Amy sitting at the table all alone, flipping through a magazine and eating a bowl of Lucky Charms. “Good morning,” he said cheerfully as he grabbed a cup of coffee.
“Hey,” she said with a grin before looking back down at her magazine.
“So, uh, where is everyone?”
“Andy’s on his run and the other three went to the supermarket.”
“Oh.” He nodded thoughtfully. Here it was, the moment he’d been waiting for since that day at the beach. And yet he still felt like as long as they were in the house, Andy or Liz would somehow hear the conversation he needed to have with Amy. “Um, you wanna go sit outside?”
Amy raised an eyebrow at him, curiosity slowly getting the best of her. “Why?”
Alex sighed. “It’s just really nice outside and thought, ya know, why let that go to waste?” Amy simply stared at him. “Of fine. I need to talk to you about something and would feel more comfortable if that could happen not in here.”
“Alright, now I’m all curious and shit.” She closed her magazine and followed Alex out onto the patio. “So what’s on your mind?” she asked as she settled into one of the white, wooden Adirondack chairs.
“Before I start I just need to know that you’re ok with keeping this between the two of us.”
“Oh.” Amy was a little bit taken aback. She had known Alex for as long as she’d known Andy but never really considered him close enough for him to confide in her.
Alex held up a hand defensively. “I’d understand if you don’t feel comfortable with this. It’s just that…you’re kind of the only one I can talk to about this.”
“Alright, I won’t tell anyone.”
“Especially not Liz.”
Amy took a moment to consider. Clearly it was something important if Alex was so nervous about the idea of discussing this with her. “It’ll strictly be an Alex/Amy conversation. Now sit you ass down and tell me what’s got you all worked up.”
He let out a sigh of relief and sat down in the chair next to her. “So you’ve known Liz for a while, right?”
“Four years and counting.”
“Wow. That’s cool. I bet you’re really close then, huh?”
“Alex, you know we are. Can you please just cut to the chase?”
“Look, this is embarrassing enough for me as it is…”
“I’m sorry. I’m just playin’ with ya.”
“I know. But I’m being stupid.”
“Take your time, dude. Seriously.”
“It’s just…if there was someone that Liz was, ya know, interested in or whatever, she’d talk to you about it, right?”
“She always has in the past. I mean, she’s really only been serious about one guy since I’ve known her but, man, did I hear all about that.”
“So has she been talking to you about anyone lately?”
Amy grinned. “Should there be?”
“I dunno. I was kind of hoping maybe…”
“Oh my God, you two are together, aren’t you?! I can’t believe she didn’t tell me! Ugh, the sneaky whore. What happened? Did you kiss her? Did she kiss you? Did you have sex yet? And why isn’t she telling me this? Does she think I don’t approve? ‘Cause I so do! I’ve been telling her that you two would be perfect together for months and-”
“Wait, wait, wait. So she hasn’t said anything to you?”
“No! And what the hell? I’m gonna kick her ass so hardcore! Why didn’t she tell me?”
Alex laughed sadly and shook his head. “Because there’s nothing to tell…”
“Oh,” Amy said, still not fully understanding. Then she got it. “Ohhhh.”
“Yeah.”
“Alex…you like her, don’t you?”
“What are we, twelve or something?”
“Oh shut up. You know what I mean.”
Alex thought for a moment, trying to find the best answer to Amy’s question. “I just…I love being with her, ya know? I love seeing her smile….”
“She does have nice teeth.” Alex started to laugh hysterically. “What? What’d I say?”
“Nothing. Don’t worry about it. Sorry.”
“Does she know how you feel?”
He shrugged. “I thought she might. I mean, we had this moment that night you got here. We were dancing and it was like we were the only people there and I was so close to just giving in and kissing her and I think she was about to let me and-”
“Oh my God! What happened?”
“Closing time. They turned the lights on on us and that was the end of it.”
“Fuck.”
“I know!”
“And you haven’t talked to her about it?”
“I can’t. I mean, what if I’m reading too much into this?”
“I could ask her.”
“No, thanks, though. That would make things way worse.”
“You could ask her.”
“Right and then she gets weirded out and stops hanging out with me and that would suck because she’s kind of my best friend.”
“Awww, Alex. Look, just because she hasn’t said anything to me doesn’t mean she’s not attracted to you. Maybe she’s talking to someone else about it.”
“Yeah? Like who?”
* * * * *
“So you’re unusually quiet this morning,” Jason commented to Liz as he grabbed a container of ground coffee off the grocery store shelf.
“Huh?” she asked, coming out of her fog. She had been doing that a lot lately, getting lost in thought.
“You feeling ok?” Mike asked, placing his hand on her forehead as if to check for a fever.
She let out a heavy sigh. She had been hoping for some kind of way to slip her questions about Alex into their conversation but that looked less and less likely to happen. In fact, she was sure Jason and Mike hadn’t mentioned him all morning. Nope, she was gonna have to nut up and just ask them. “I’m fine. Just a lot on my mind, I guess.”
“Anything you wanna talk about?” Mike asked as he pushed the shopping cart down the next aisle.
“It’s kind of a difficult situation…”
“Would you call it a ‘No Win Situation?’” Jason laughed.
Liz punched his arm lightly. “You’re such a dork.”
“Sorry, it was just right there, ya know?”
“Yeah, yeah,” Liz said, rolling her eyes. “Anyway…can I talk to you guys and have you not, like, judge me or anything?”
“Consider the cereal aisle a judgment free zone,” Jason answered.
“Ever since the four of us went out the night Amy got here I feel like Alex has been maybe acting a little bit…different. Actually, I think maybe it stated before then but I just didn’t notice.”
“And by ‘different’ you mean what?” asked Michael.
“Ugh, are you gonna make me ask straight out?” Both Mike and Jason nodded. “Does he have feelings for me?”
“Alex?” Jason asked. “Our Alex?”
“Do we all know another Alex?”
“No, I’m just surprised. I mean, he’s usually kind of obvious when he’s into a girl. Like, we have to slap him to make him shut up about her.”
“So you don’t think so?” Liz asked, trying not to sound disappointed.
“Based on how he’s been in the past, I’m gonna go with no,” Mike answered. “Sorry if that’s not what you wanted to hear.” He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and gave her arm a light, comforting squeeze.
“No! No, that’s exactly what I was hoping for. I mean, could you imagine how awkward it would be if either of us had the hots for the other?” She laughed, trying to convince them that she could the notion completely ridiculous.
“Oh, cool,” Jay said. He wasn’t completely convinced but just let it go. If Liz wasn’t ready to admit her feelings for Alex to herself then he wasn’t gonna push her to admit them to him and Mike.
* * * * *
“So you’ll call me when you get home, right?” Liz asked Amy as she hugged her best friend in the driveway.
“Yes, Mom.”
“Don’t make me slap you.” Liz laughed and pulled back to wipe the tears from her eyes.
“You’d never slap me.”
“I know. God, I’m gonna miss us.”
Me, too. But you’ll be coming to the city in a little over a month and then I’ll graduate and come back here with you and we’ll live in our amazing apartment together just like we always planned.” Tears were welling up in Amy’s eyes.
“Aww, group hug!” Alex exclaimed, wrapping his arms around the two girls, trying to lighten the mood.
Amy and Liz couldn’t help but laugh. “Sorry to ruin the moment but we gotta go, Ames,” Andy said. He smiled sadly at the girls, knowing the he, too, would have to say goodbye to Amy soon.
“I’ll see ya soon.” Amy hugged Liz one last time before taking Andy’s hand. He walked to her to the Jeep and helped her into the front seat.
As soon as they pulled down the driveway and drove out of sight, Alex was in the house and ran up the stairs. He quickly changed into a pair of gray slacks and a button-down black shirt. He picked up his cell phone and typed out a text message before checking himself in the mirror one last time. He was just about to walk out his bedroom door when he realized he was forgetting something. A quick spritz of Polo Black and he was good to go.
“Where you off to?” Mike asked from the couch when he saw Alex coming down the stairs?
“Yeah, you got a hot date or something?” Jason added.
“Um, actually, I do.” Alex checked his watch and looked out the window next to the front door.
“With who?” Jason asked.
“That one receptionist from the Hollywood Records office,” he answered, still nervously checking the time.
“The one that always hits on you?” Mike asked.
“The one that always hits on who?” Liz asked, walking out of her bedroom in a pair of slouchy sweats and a t-shirt that was about one size too big.
“The slutty lookin’ chick that always flirts with Alex at the label office,” Mike said, filling her in. He didn’t notice Jason cringe next to him.
“Oh,” was all Liz could manage to say.
“Yeah, I mean, she gave me her number a few months ago and I just, I dunno, thought I should give her a chance.” Alex looked out the window, unable to look her in the eyes. He thought that maybe by going out with another girl he would forget about his feelings for Liz. Instead he just felt like an asshole.
“Oh….good! That’s good. Great, even! And you look great. Very suave. Have fun!” He really didn’t have feelings for her other than friendship. She couldn’t believe it. Even after talking to Mike and Jason she’d still held out some tiny amount of hope but that was just popped like an over inflated balloon.
A honk came from outside, breaking the awkward silence in the room. “That’s my car,” Alex said, gesturing to the door.
“You ordered a car?” Mike asked him. “Wow. You really are out to impress this girl.”
Alex shrugged and snuck a glance back at Liz, who had her arms folded over her chest. “Well, Andy’s got the car so I really didn’t have a choice. I, uh, I’ll try to be quiet when I come in later.” He waved then was out the door.
“So…..wanna watch a movie?” Jason asked Liz.
“I, uh, think I’m gonna turn in early. I’m really tired. It’s been a busy week. Thanks though.”
“Well, we’ll be out here if you change your mind,” Mike offered.
“Thanks. Goodnight, guys.” She smiled at them then shuffled back into her room. She immediately crawled into bed, wrapping the blankets tightly around her. So she had been wrong. Alex wasn’t interested in her at all. Instead he was taking out some girl that Mike thought was slutty looking. She snorted. If Mike thought she was slutty then she must be practically naked all the time. She closed her eyes and tried to fall asleep, praying that this didn’t mean she would be losing both of her best friends in one day.

Chapter Nine
Liz shuffled up the walkway to the front door, completely exhausted. Her editor had been getting on her case lately and she suspected it was due to the fact that she was taking her two weeks of vacation in a month, starting on Christmas Eve. She had been excited about the trip home for the holidays and then to New York for New Year’s Eve and Amy’s graduation but lately she’d been completely uninterested in going or doing much of anything. That was probably because Alex hadn’t been around much since he’d started dating Stacy. Liz still wasn’t convinced that was even her real name. It was the most ridiculously “Valley girl” name ever, which, unfortunately, described Stacy perfectly. Liz and the rest of the guys had even started calling her “Malibu Stacy,” but only when Alex wasn’t around, of course. That was the worst part. He was never around anymore. It was almost like he was trying to avoid her.
As she reached for the knob of the front door it turned quickly and suddenly Alex was in the doorway. “Hey, where you off to in such a hurry?” she asked him when he almost plowed right into her.
“Just on my way to…are you ok?”
The look of concern in his eyes was enough to almost make her break down. “It’s just been a rough week.”
Without saying a word, Alex wrapped his arms around her and pulled her against his body. She closed her eyes and rested her cheek against his chest while he ran his hand over her hair. “You wanna talk about it?” he whispered.
Oh, if only I could, she thought. “But you were leaving…”
“That can wait. Come on.” He guided her into the house and right to her bedroom. Liz sat down on the futon and Alex grabbed the chair from the computer desk and sat down on it across from her. “Now tell what’s bothering you.”
“My boss is giving me all these extra articles to work on and he’s nit picking everything I write.”
“When did this start?”
“Ever since her asked me if I really needed the time off for the trip east and I said yes.”
“But you told him about that when you first started months ago.”
“I know! But now he’s putting all this pressure on me and-” Alex’s phone started ringing from the pocket of his jeans. “Are you gonna answer that?”
Alex pulled his phone out of his pocket and checked to see who was calling him. He rolled his eyes and set it down on the desk after sending it to voicemail. “You’re more important. They can wait.”
Liz smiled. “Thanks.”
Alex leaned forward, his arms crossed and elbows on his knees. “You wanna know what I think?”
Liz giggled. “I dunno. Do I?”
“I think he’s testing you.”
“Testing me?”
“He wants to see how much you can take. And I know you can take a whole hell of a lot.” He chuckled for a second. “That sounded kind of bad.”
Liz had missed him, missed moments like this when it was just the two of them. “I’m not so sure. He’s already got me rethinking my plans…”
“Lizzy, you’ll be fine. You’ll be way more than fine. You’re a total sports journalism superstar.” He reached for her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “And don’t give him the satisfaction of seeing you stress. You’ll be fine, he’ll see how talented and cool under pressure you are, and then we all get to party in New York on New Year’s Eve.”
His confidence in her was enough to make her blush. “Thanks, Alex.” She grinned and looked down, seeing that her hand was still in his.
He put his other hand under her chin and tilted her face back up. “It’s kind of what friends are for.” Here it was again, his moment, his golden opportunity. Then his phone rang again.
“That could be important.” Alex’s heart dropped. He nodded and grabbed his phone. “It’s Stacy, isn’t it?”
“Yeah…”
“So answer it, silly. I mean, she’s who you were rushing off to see, right?”
Alex nodded. “Hey,” he said into the phone. “Yeah, I’m running late. No, I didn’t forget. Something came up. Uh huh.” He slumped forward in the chair and ran his hand through his hair. “No, of course not. Stacy, don’t be ridiculous. She’s not even here. No. I had to, uh, help Mike with something for the band. I’m leaving now. Ok. See you in a few.” He hung up and smiled at Liz, hoping she was fooled by his forced cheerfulness. “I gotta go.” He stood up and shoved his hands into his pockets.
“Thanks for being late for me,” she said earnestly.
“You’re very welcome. I’ll see ya later.”
Liz waited for the sound of the front door closing before falling back onto her bed, a huge smile on her face. From what she could gather from the one side of Alex’s conversation with his girlfriend, Stacy wasn’t very fond of her. In fact, it seemed like she was making sure that Alex wasn’t with her. Even though she was sure it was a more than a little wrong, she found some joy in the fact that Stacy wasn’t too fond of her being around Alex and, more importantly, that he was willing to be late for his date if it meant making sure she was alright.
* * * * *
“Thank you sooooo much for driving me home,” Alex slurred as he stumbled in through the front door.
Stacy was leading him by the hand. “I can’t believe how drunk you are,” she said with a giggle.
“Shhh.” Alex shushed her loudly. “My roommates are trying to sleep.”
“Do you realize that this is the first time I’ve ever been to your house?” Stacy turned the living room light on and looked around. She wrinkled her nose at the obvious bachelor pad style of the space. Empty beer bottles sat on the coffee table. Blankets printed with the logos of various sports teams were piled on the couch, loveseat, and armchair.
“This is casa del Honor Society.” Alex grinned, proud of himself and his friends.
“Um, it’s very…cozy. But you know what I’m really anxious to see?” She cooed, running her hands up Alex’s chest seductively.
“What’s that?”
“Your room.”
Under normal circumstances he would’ve laughed off her blatant offer for sex and found some excuse to avoid it, just as he’d done every night they’d gone out. And it wasn’t that Alex was opposed to having sex; he was just opposed to having sex with girls that weren’t Liz. Of course, that was under normal circumstances. The amount of vodka he’d consumed at the bar sent normal flying out the window. “Ok.”
Stacy grinned from ear to ear. “Come on, baby.” She grabbed his hand and led him up the stairs. Alex could hear the other guys snoring softly from their rooms. He nodded when she pointed to his open bedroom door. As soon as they crossed the threshold, Stacy closed the door and pushed him onto the bed. Alex sat up, his legs over the edge of his mattress, as she straddled him. “You ready for me to rock your world?” she whispered before nibbling gently on his earlobe.
Alex responded by running his hands up the back of her shirt, searching for the clasp of her bra. She kissed him feverishly, pushing her tongue past his lips, encouraging him as he undid the hooks. Alex closed his eyes, focusing on the feeling of her soft skin under his fingertips as he slipped her bra straps over her shoulders and then cupped his hands over her breasts. Stacy’s lips moved away from Alex’s, traveling along his jaw and down his neck. The groan that rose from his throat and the growing stiffness beneath her encouraged her to encouraged her to continue grinding against his lap and lightly sucking on his neck.
“Oh, God, Liz…”
“What the fuck did you just call me?”
* * * * *
Liz looked at her phone, checking the time. Two-thirty. “Fuck!” she said, staring at the screen of her laptop. She’d read and reread her article over and over again and had tweaked it numerous times and still wasn’t happy. She wanted it to be absolutely perfect but it just didn’t flow the way she wanted it to. She heard someone come in the front door and rolled her eyes. Alex was finally home from his date with the succubus. Then she heard a female voice. She he’d brought her home; it was bound to happen eventually. But the sound of Stacy’s giggle madder her feel like she’d been stabbed in the stomach and someone was turning the knife. When she heard them stumble up the stairs she quickly grabbed her headphones and plugged them into her computer, preparing for what she was sure would be some loud thumping from overhead.
She started typing, throwing herself back into the task at hand. Moments later, though, she was pulled out of her concentration by the sound of yelling and a door slamming upstairs followed by someone running down the stairs. Curiosity got the best of her and she took off her headphones. She expected to hear voices again but only heard the front door open and close and a car engine start outside. She shrugged and put her headphones back on, determined to get her article perfected before she had to turn it in a few hours.
* * * * *
Liz found out what the slamming door was all about the following day. Alex explained to her, Andy, Jason, and Mike that he and Stacy had gotten into a fight and broke up. That was it, no further explanation. He never told them that he’d said Liz’s name, how he had been wishing that it was her body he was touching and not Stacy’s. Instead, he kept that to himself. But as he lay in bed, staring at his ceiling, and unable to sleep for the second night since it’d happened, Alex knew enough was enough. He got up and quickly got dressed, pulling on a pair of jean shorts and a hoodie, before quietly slipping out of his room and sneaking out of the house. As he walked down the sidewalk, he pulled out his phone and typed out a quick text message. Now there was no turning back. He’d already pushed the “SEND” button.
* * * * *
Liz’s eyes snapped open although she wasn’t exactly sure what had woken her up. Then she saw the familiar red light flashing on her BlackBerry. She grabbed her phone, curious about who would be texting or e-mailing her in the middle of the night.
Meet me @ the playground. Plz. We need to talk. – A
Her heart raced. Jason had seen through her act that day in the supermarket. He’d seen right through her and he told Alex everything and now he wanted to talk to her and tell her why they could never be together. That was the only possible reason she could think of for him wanting to meet her like this. She got out of bed and got dressed, wondering if she would be able to wear those clothes again without thinking about the night she got rejected by Alex Noyes.
It was a quick walk to the neighborhood playground. It wasn’t even much of a playground, just a few swings and a slide. As she got closer, Liz could see him sitting on one of the swings. “Hey,” she said softly.
Alex looked up and he smiled brightly. “You came!”
“Did you expect me not to?” she teased. Liz leaned against the support pole of the swing set, putting a fair amount of distance between them.
“No…not, I guess I knew you would.” He looked at the ground and kicked a few of the cedar chips around with his toes. “So, I feel like I need to be honest with you about a few things.”
“Look, Alex, we don’t have to-”
“Lizzy, I would normally never interrupt you but I feel like if I don’t get this all out at once I might realize what I’m saying and throw up.”
“Umm, let’s avoid that.”
He laughed nervously. “So, um, I had this whole thing planned out in my head and now I can’t really think of how I wanted to start. I’ve kind of got this problem because you’re my best friend but I think I might be falling for you. And after I talked to Amy and she told me that you weren’t interested I thought I could get over you by seeing someone else but that definitely didn’t work. Really the only thing I haven’t tried is just talking to you about it so I thought I’d give it a shot but now you’re looking at me kind of funny and I’m thinking maybe this was a bad idea.”
“It wasn’t a bad idea, Alex,” she whispered, completely taken aback by what he was saying.
He shrugged. “It’s just that night in the bar, I thought that maybe we had a moment but I guess that was just wishful thinking. I just hope we can still be friends after this. Of course, I totally understand if it was too awkward for you to hang out with me or whatevs.”
“Are you done?”
“Pretty much.”
“Good.” Liz walked over to him, standing between his legs. “And just so we’re clear, there was a moment that night. And there have been so many since and there was always a tiny part of me that thought maybe you were feeling the same way I was.”
Alex swallowed nervously. “And that would be how, exactly?”
Liz smirked and put her hands on his cheeks. “Kind of like this,” she whispered against his lips before leaning all the way in and kissing him.
It took Alex’s brain a second to actually register what was happening. He felt Liz’s nails rake up the back of his head, urging him to take the lead and deepen their kiss, which he did eagerly. His own hands found her waist and he pulled her closer against him. He had heard about people feeling lighter than air when they kiss someone they really love but he felt like he was floating and falling. Then his head hit he ground and he realized that he was, in reality, falling backwards.
“Oh my God, are you alright?” she asked, trying not to laugh. She had fallen with him but was lucky enough to still be in his arms when they hit the cedar chips the covered the ground. She sat up, straddling his stomach, to give him room to sit up.
Alex propped himself up on one elbow and used his other hand to rub the back of his head. “I think so. Next time we do that remind me to hang on to the damn swing.”

aww thanks guys! here's the new chapter!

Chapter Ten
Liz couldn’t believe that she had hidden her true feelings for Alex for so long. Having his hands on her back, in her hair, running up her legs just felt right. She forgot that they were outside, forgot that she’d promised Andy that she wouldn’t hook up with any of his band mates, and forgot that she had ever had strictly plutonic feelings for the man whose lips she was kissing. She heard a car pull up behind them but paid it no mind. “Hey you kids! I know who you are and don’t think I won’t tell your mothers about this!” a man yelled from the car as he drove by.
“Oh, shit,” Alex laughed. “We are so grounded.”
“Wait,” Liz said, pulling back from him. “What time is it?” She grabbed his arm and looked at his watch. “Fuck!”
“What?” Alex checked for himself. “We’ve been out here for two hours!”
“Yeah and I gotta be awake and ready to go to work in, like, two hours.” She put her hands on his chest for balance as she stood up then offered him a hand up. Alex resisted the urge to pull her back down on top of him and, instead, got to his feet.
They walked back to the house together, hand in hand. Every time Alex looked at her he was slightly surprised to see her smiling at him. They both held their breath as Liz unlocked the front door, afraid that someone was awake and waiting for them, having discovered that they were both missing. When they saw that the coast was clear, they both exhaled audibly and in unison, making Liz laugh silently. Always the gentleman, Alex walked her to her door. “So…” he said, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
“So.”
“I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Well we do kind of live together.”
“Harharhar, smartass.”
“You like that I’m a smartass,” Liz said, beaming up at him.
“So what’re you doing tomorrow night, or, I guess, tonight?”
“I don’t have any plans.”
“Maybe we could do something.”
“That would be good.”
“Good.” He gave her a quick kiss then took a step back almost immediately.
“Hey, what was that?” She put her hands on his neck, wanting something more than that.
Alex laughed and took her hands in his, lightly swinging their arms back and forth. “Let’s just leave it at that for tonight.”
“Isn’t the girl supposed to be the one that tries to slow things down?”
“Trust me. If we don’t stop there for now you will be very, very tired at work tomorrow.” He grinned and tapped the end of her nose with his index finger.
Liz rolled her eyes. “Oh, you think so?”
“Just you wait,” he said.
“Oh, go to bed before I smack you.”
“Goodnight,” he said planting a kiss on her forehead.
“Goodnight.” Liz walked into her room and closed the door behind her.
Alex rubbed the bump that had formed on the back of his head as he walked up the stairs. He knew he would be slightly grateful to have it when he woke up. It would be proof that the events of the evening had actually taken place. He stripped off his shorts and hoodie before climbing back into the bed he had left a few hours earlier. Unlike the last time he’d rested his head on his pillow, he fell to sleep quickly and with a smile still on his lips.
* * * * *
“This was just dropped off for you.”
Liz looked up from her computer screen to see the office secretary, Linda, standing next to her desk with a venti-sized Starbucks cup. “By whom?” she asked, taking the cup from the much older woman.
“A rather attractive young man,” Linda said with a wink.
That’s not very helpful as I know four rather attractive young me, Liz thought. Of course, she couldn’t say that to Linda and not sound like a total bitch. “Did he say anything else?”
“That he will be back at one to take you to lunch. You know, you’re lucky to have such a nice boyfriend.” Linda took off her glasses, letting them hang from the chain around her neck. “If only I’d met a handsome gentleman like that when I was your age. Then maybe I would’ve never married my first husband…or my second for that matter. I remember this one boy that asked me to go out to dinner with him in the summer of ’66, or was it ’67? Anyway, he drove a-”
“Thank you so much for bringing this all the way over here.” Liz smiled, trying to politely give Linda the message that visiting time was over.
“Anytime, sweetie. You have a nice day.” She put her glasses back on and walked away.
Liz took a sip of her coffee and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a pumpkin spice late. She picked up her cell phone and called Alex. “Hey, mysterious coffee giver.”
“So you figured out it was me, huh?”
“I did. And it is quite delicious. Did I ever tell you that the PSL is my all-time favorite hot beverage?”
Alex laughed. “Not really, but you’ve been ordering it a lot lately so I kind of figured it out.”
“You’re quite the observant one.”
“I try. Plus, I felt bad about the late night last night.”
“That sounds much dirtier than it should.”
“My bad. So anyway, you free for lunch?”
“I can be for the right person,” she teased.
“So I’ll pick you up at one?”
“That’d be perfect. I’ll see ya then.”
“Great. Bye.”
“Later.” I am lucky have such a nice boyfriend, she thought. But was Alex her boyfriend? Did they get to skip the in-between, dating but not boyfriend/girlfriend part since they were already friends? Plus, they were living together. That was comparable to at least a few months of casual dating, right? And how long should they wait before actually living together in the sharing a bed sense? And what about the other guys? Had Alex told them already? What about Andy? Was he mad at her? She had promised him that she wouldn’t get involved with any of his band mates. She grabbed her phone and hit redial. “Hey. Sorry, it’s me again. Could we make it twelve-thirty instead?”
* * * * *
Alex stepped off the elevator and walked up to the reception desk. “Well, look who’s back,” the elderly receptionist said to him.
“It’s nice to see you again. Is Liz Manning around?” he asked.
“Right here,” she called, walking through the class door that separated the reception area from the rest of the office. She was wearing a knee-length, camel-colored suede skirt that fit tightly down her legs before flaring out slightly at the bottom. A green v-neck top with a tiny floral print and dark green stacked heel pumps completed the outfit.
“You look beautiful,” Alex said when he finally caught his breath.
“You don’t look so bad yourself,” she said, noticing how the rolled up sleeves of his plaid button down shirt showed off his muscular forearms. “So where we going?” Liz slipped her hand into his as they got onto the elevator.
“There’s a really great Thai place about three blocks down from here. You alright with walking in those things? I mean, we can drive if you want. It’s just that it’s super nice outside.”
“Oh, walking’s totally fine. When you’re a short girl you get used to walking in heels.”
They strode down the sidewalk to the restaurant in a comfortable silence, just enjoying the warmth of the sun and each other’s company. When they got to the restaurant they got a seat right away in a booth by a window. “You come here a lot?” Liz asked before taking a sip from the glass of water that was just set down in front of her.
“We’ve been here a few times,” he answered.
“Well, you can order for me because I have no idea what to get.”
“Just get what you like.”
“I’ve only had Thai food as take-out with you guys so I don’t really know what I like. I trust you.”
Alex smiled. He liked the sound of that. When the waitress came back he gave her their order. “So, about last night…”
“It was a very interesting night.”
“But the good kind of interesting, right?”
“Oh, totally. It was a nice surprise.” She rubbed his leg with her foot under the table. “So, this might sound kind of weird but what do we do now?”
“What d’you mean?”
“Well, are we a couple now?”
“Do you want to be?”
Liz smiled and bit her bottom lip. “That’s not fair. I asked you first.”
“I’m not gonna be seeing anyone else, Liz. You’re it, the only girl I want.”
“Alllex, you can’t go around saying stuff like that,” she whined.
He laughed softly. “Sorry. But you know what I mean, right?”
Liz nodded. “Not that I’ve been having to beat boys away with a bat but if they suddenly show up I’ll be telling them that I’m taken.”
“Good. Great, actually.”
“Ready for another question?” she asked.
“Shoot.”
“Well, it’s more like a suggestion than a question.”
“Then suggest away.”
“Let’s not tell anybody about us just yet.”
Alex was a little bit taken aback. Thankfully, the waitress appeared at the table with their food, buying him a few moments to collect his thoughts. But he could only think of one thing. “Are you embarrassed to be with me?”
“Alex! Come on!” She laughed hysterically.
“What? What’d I say?”
“That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Why would I be embarrassed to be with you?”
“I dunno.”
“I’ve been thinking that some people might be more willing to accept us as a legit couple if we had, like, a month or two under our belts to show as proof that we, ya know, work or whatevs.”
“And by ‘some people’ you mostly mean Andy, right?”
“I wouldn’t be all weird about this if I hadn’t promised him that I wouldn’t hook up with any of his roommates.”
“But we’re not just randomly hooking up. We’re doing the relationship thing.”
“Right and after we’re together for a few months he’ll be more willing to see that.”
“And you know this means you can’t tell anyone.”
Liz had thought of that. She wouldn’t be able to call Amy and gush over her most recent date. Hell, she couldn’t even tell her own mother that she was with Alex since she would probably just tell Andy’s mom. They would have to keep things completely plutonic at home whenever someone else was around. It would certainly complicate things but she felt like this was the only way to avoid making Andy feel betrayed. “I know. Are you ok with this?”
“I guess I kind of have to be.”
“If you’re not comfortable then we can figure something else out.”
“No, I’m fine. We’ll make it work,” Alex said, reaching across the table, rubbing the back of her hand with his fingertips. And he hoped with all his hear that he was right.

I am here! As promised! =) I apologize for not commenting after every chapter but I really wanted to keep reading!

I just read all of these chapters and I have to say that this is an AMAZING story you've got going on here! Liz and Amy are both great characters. As are the Gentlemen, obviously. Your dialogue and jokes are HYSTERICAL. It's currently a little past 1AM my time and I had to slap a hand to my mouth to keep from laughing a little too loud.

CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT THE ZEBRA BATHROBE. That visual...well, let's just say that I could see it. In my head. PERFECTLY...and it was awesome! =) hahaha.

I can't wait to see what you've got up your sleeve, Trish! You're really talented. At first I was a little confused as to what the pairing might turn out to be but I'm glad you picked Alex. Well, for obvious reasons.

I really can't wait until you update. I don't usually come on this site (heck, I created an account just so I could comment!) but you bet I'll come back to read this.
