Ch.5
The day at the shop seemed to be going by so slow for Maddie especially after Alex left. She kept looking at the clock. Finally her co-worker Christina came early and took over leaving ten minutes for Madelyn to get ready before Alex came. She quickly made her way to the bathroom where she quickly added some eyeliner and mascara and made sure everything else looked alright.
With five minutes left to spare she decided to go outside just to check if he was there and he was.
“Hi.” She said as he got out of his car.
“Hey.” He said as he walked over and gave her a hug. “How was the rest of work?”
“Much less exciting then when you were there.” Madelyn teased.
“Yeah I bet.” He said as he walked over and opened her car door for her.
“Thanks.” Madelyn said as she slipped in. Alex closed the behind her. He joined her in the driver’s seat and started the car.
“So where to?” He asked.
“I don’t know, I’m new here, where’s you’re favorite place to eat?” Madelyn asked.
“Do you like burgers?” Alex asked.
“Yeah, good burger place around here?” Madelyn asked.
“The best!” Alex said as he started driving.
“So are you originally from the west coast?”
“No, moved here just last year. I’m originally from New Jersey and the band I’m in with Jason, Andy, and Mike- we’re from New York.”
“Cool, you miss the east coast?” Madelyn questioned.
“I love it out here and I’m following my dream, but yes I miss it. What about you? Where are you originally from?”
“I’m originally from New York.”
“That’s cool, you miss it?”
“Yeah I do, but its nice being out here too, actually I sorta needed to come out here.” Madelyn said. Alex thought that answer was weird but let it slide for the time being.
They made their way to the restaurant and with the traffic since it was around rush hour, it took them a little over a half hour to get there. Once they got there, there was a little bit of a wait so Alex put his name down.
“We have around a half hour wait…wanted to play a game of pool?” He asked as he pointed to a pool table.
“If you’re ready and willing to lose to a girl, sure.” Madelyn said as she sauntered over to the table. Alex seemed surprised at first but smirked and followed her over to the table.
Alex did have to give Madelyn some credit; she was a pretty good pool player. It was also a really good way to get to know her more, during their turns they were concentrating but they were also asking each other questions back and forth.
“Boyfriend?” He asked as he made his way over to the white ball getting ready to hit it.
“No, girlfriend?” Madelyn asked back as she watched him have a pretty nice shot.
“No…”
“But there is that girl you’re trying to impress, right?” She asked as she hit one of her solid color balls into the pocket.
“Yes, there’s her.” Alex answered. Alex walked around the table to see his next shot.
“Siblings?”
“An older sister.” Madelyn replied.
“You?”
“A younger sister.” He said as hit one of his balls in.
Madelyn went up to the table and got ready to hit her balls. Alex knew it was her question but decided to ask anyway…
“Madelyn, why’d you move out here?” He asked. As he asked that Madelyn completely missed her shot. She stood up straight and looked at him… She opened her mouth.
“Alex?” The hostess asked. Madelyn put her stick down and walked past Alex to the hostess. He put down his pool stick down and quickly followed her.
The hostess sat them down and gave them their menus.
“Madelyn, I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean to pry or make you upset.”
“It’s fine.” She said as she looked up from her menu. She sighed and put it down and looked at him. “Might as well get this over with, I’m planning on spending more time with you.” She said to Alex which made him smile. He put his menu to the side too and gave her his full attention.
“Ok so not that many people know this… I used to be a composer and musician. I used to write scores and write music for movies, tv shows, commercials, whatever people needed them for. It was something I loved doing and I was really good at it. But for some reason or another, I’ve lost my music. I can’t write anything. I sit down to write something and it just its black, nothing comes to me. I moved here to try to get it back.” Madelyn answered it truthfully. During her little monologue Alex’s hand had traveled across the table and had taken her hand in his for moral support. He was quiet for a few moments thinking. He really didn’t think that it was about finding the music, but more about finding herself. But he felt like he couldn’t really tell her that.
“So let’s find it.” Alex said.
“Wait seriously?!” Madelyn asked surprised.
“Um yeah, why?”
“You actually want to help me?”
“Yeah, it’ll be fun. Plus, it’ll give me an excuse to hang out with you more.” Alex said with a wink as he went back to looking at his menu. Madelyn couldn’t wipe the smile off her face. Madelyn followed Alex’s lead and went to looking at her menu. Neither realizing that his hand was still holding onto hers.
The date had been awesome. They both got awesome burgers and Alex still seemed like he wanted to hang out with Madelyn even after she had ketchup on her face and she was unaware and he had to wipe it off for her. Alex parked his car and walked Madelyn to her apartment. All the while they were holding hands. It wasn’t anything big but both couldn’t fight the butterflies in their stomachs saying that this was right.
“Thanks for tonight Alex, I had fun.” Madelyn said as they got to her door.
“Yeah me too, call me soon? We have a lot of fun things we need to do together.” Alex said.
“Ok.” Madelyn said with a small smile as she leaned up on her tip toes and left a quick kiss on his cheek.
“Goodnight.” Alex said.
“Night.” She said as she bit her lip and found her key to her apartment. Alex couldn’t help but find her adorable as she bit her lip bashfully. As she opened her door Alex turned around and made his way to his apartment. Madelyn leaned up against her door as she closed it and took a deep breath. Tonight had been awesome. Whenever she was with Alex he just happened to make her happy. She walked in a little more into the apartment and noticed a bouquet of flowers on the kitchen table… actually the bouquet she made with Alex. There was a card leaning up against the vase.
To the girl I’m trying to impress. Sorry I made a fool of myself and a mess of the flower shop today. Can’t wait to see you at dinner.

Madelyn smiled as she leaned down and smelled the flowers. So she was that girl he was trying to impress… he didn’t have to try though because slowly but surely he was sweeping Madelyn off her feet.
